Some shutters are missing from my bedroom window,
but there is a screen in front of it
so no worries, right?

Well this morning while I lazed about in bed
loud propellers of a helicopter
shattered the silence

and I sat up with a jolt!
Da we di hell?

Lo and behold,
a bird was perfectly perched
in the empty window pane area.

It was small,
roundish and
dark brown or black?

Anyway, it skittishly flew away
as quickly as it had come.

I laid back down
and gazed into the empty space
where the shutters should be
I never noticed
they were missing in the first place.


I decided right then and there
that that bird was a friend

and gave it a name.
